According to new research from the Psychiatric University Hospital at the University of Basel in Switzerland, the full moon can disturb normal sleeping patterns.

By looking at data from a study that took place from the years 2000 to 2003, researchers were able to determine that subjects slept better during the new moon, and had a harder time sleeping when the moon was full.

The study did not originally incorporate the lunar cycle into the data, but researchers took the data and compared it with the lunar calendar.

On nights when the moon was full, participants in the study took an average of five minutes longer to fall asleep, and slept for 20 minutes less than on other nights.

Melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep was also shown to be lower during the full moon.

Christian Cajochen, a biologist and lead author of the new study said; "It took me more than four years until I decided to publish the results, because I did not believe it myself."

This study is the first scientific research to show a connection between the lunar cycles and human sleep patterns.
